It’s true, Nico is eight weeks old today. I haven’t posted a Nico update in a while, but it seems that there is some interest in weekly updates, so I’m more than happy to oblige!
Nico had a crazy growth spurt this week, and now weighs in at a hefty 11lbs 03oz. I’m ecstatic about this, of course, especially since I was so concerned about the breastfeeding. (aside: I’m going to do a post on my BF experience soon.)
Nico has also been smiling a lot more, which is great, because the constant crying was really starting to wear us down. I’ve also really started to differentiate his types of crying. His “hungry” cry is the most distinct and recognizable. There is no mistaking when this kid wants to eat! But I can also tell when he needs to burp, or when he needs to be held.
Also (and I’m super embarrassed to reveal this) I’ve discovered that a lot of his crying was due to the fact that I wasn’t changing him often enough. This kid HATES being in a wet or dirty diaper. I mean, he HATES it. Changing him instantly stops the crying. Now, don’t get me wrong, I never let him linger in his diapers for hours or anything, but I’m now changing them pretty much every hour. It makes for a lot more washing, and my stash of 22 cloth diapers is starting to look pretty meager. I’m going to have to sink some more cash into another dozen or so diapers. They weren’t kidding when they said we’d go through a lot of diapers.
So now that we’ve dealt with Nico’s ill humours, he has much more time to play and develop. He’s been kicking up a storm lately, and still loves to stand while we hold him up. His legs are strong, and I’ve even been able to lean him up against the couch’s armrest and he can hold himself there for a few seconds. It’s adorable.
Finally, Nico is really starting to be more independent. I’ve noticed a huge difference this week – namely that I don’t have to hold him ALL the time. He actually tolerates (and dare I say enjoys) being in his crib, looking at his mobile, or sitting in his bouncy chair and reaching for toys. His favourite toys at the moment are his owl and his monkey.
He’s also focusing a lot more on things around him. Obviously his favourite things are his mamma and papa, but he’s also taking in a lot more of the world. As always, he loves going on walks, and stays awake when we travel and is content to just look around.
So there you have it, 8 weeks, 56 days, 1344 hours of Nico. I can’t wait to see what he’ll do next!
