Sorry I went M.I.A. this weekend – I left the city and went up to my mom and stepdad’s cottage. It was a really wonderful time, and featured a lot more wine spritzers and potato salad than it did workout DVDs or running. But that’s okay. You can read more about the weekend over at Bad Dirt Designs… Pretty pictures guaranteed.
But before I left for the weekend, I did make sure to squeeze in a run. I was meeting some girlfriends for dinner after work on Thursday, and when plans got shuffled, I ended up having enough time to do a short run from work. I used to run on my lunch hour a lot, and discovered that working out during the workday can be a great mid-day distraction. It takes some forethought and planning, but I remember many times when I was zoning out hardcore at my desk, and a 20min run would totally re-energize me. (way better than a candy bar or coffee).
Of course, I hadn’t planned on running last Thursday, so I didn’t have any gear with me (except for my running shoes – I have a pair that I keep at my desk all the time.) so I made a dash to the local Zeller’s for some cheap workout clothes:
Gotta love Zellers.
I also had these little maps in my desk drawer.
I made these up a couple of years ago, where I printed out a map, wrote out the course, and then added the mileage on the back so I’d have a quick and easy reference to help me choose how far to go when I’m running on my lunch break. I have a map for 3k, 4.5k, and 5.5k. (I just carry them with me during the run).
They’re great, and are a huge motivator for me. I added a few blocks to this route last Thursday to make it a 3.5k run.
It felt good to get some exercise in before leaving for the island, where the only physical activities I did (other than cocktail arm raises) were pedal-boating and kayaking.
But now I’m back home, and just finished Day 8 of the 30-Day Shred. Let me tell you, what a difference 3 days off can make!!! I felt strong and rejuvenated, and the workout left me feeling pumped, instead of haggard (which was how I was feeling late last week).
And now Ange and I are going to enjoy a nice supper and some QT at home. We’ve got quite a few excursions planned for our vacation this week, so we’re taking some time now just to chill.
