The warmth, the extended daylight, the shedding of outerwear… these are things that make me irrepressibly happy. There has been a change in my mood lately, and while I can’t pinpoint exactly how or why or how long it will last, I’m having a great fucking time these days.
A lot of it has to do with Roller Skating. Just to clarify – I’m not saying I’m roller-derbying just yet, on account of my Fresh Meat status (oh sigh, how I yearn to move up to Rookie!!) but I have some skates, and I just get so jazzed about roller skating. A couple of the girls took me out for an outdoor skate around the canal (the world’s largest ice rink in the winter – the world’s largest open sewage system in the summer). I was way nervous about it as I biked up to girlfriend’s house, but she was so good, she never mentioned it, and we had our skates on and were out the door so fast I didn’t have time to psych myself out. I was a little shaky around cars at first, but then when we got on the bike path, it was just good times.
And here’s the thing about roller skates – - EVERY TIME I DO IT, I END UP FEELING EFFIN’ FANTASTIC. No matter what mood I’m in when I start. No matter what shit is going down at home or at work. No matter if I skate for 10 minutes or 100 minutes. IT MAKES ME HAPPY.
Even sporting this pretty number from an incident on the path doesn’t deter me from wanting to get back into my skates again and again, and again.
Though I dropped to one knee (padded, of course) as is protocol when you feel you’re losing control of your skates, I still managed to use my ass as brakes. It could have been a lot worse.
So yeah, things are great. Oh, and I’ve been cooking too, but not taking many pictures. Here are a few from a while ago.
These are eggplant sandwiches. This sandwich monster tried to wean herself off bread for a while, and I was experimenting with substitutes for sandwiches… They were okay.
And these were an improvised mini casserole with some left over TVP. It was basically cooked TVP with some sort of flavoured sauce (I’m thinking tamari, Nutritional Yeast, and other usual suspects were involved) and I broiled the whole thing with a slice of soy cheeze on top. A little Paprika for colour, and there you go. Baby Brussels Sprouts are my new favourite veggie. They are wicked good.
